Wedding Rings – Welsh Gold; Fit For A King?

Wedding rings literally come in all shapes and sizes but very few are made from the sought after precious metal of Welsh gold. It does, however, have a particularly impressive claim to fame that is making it an immensely desired material; namely the fact that Welsh gold is the precious metal of choice when it comes to the wedding rings that adorn the fingers of royalty.

Wedding Rings – A Royal Engagement

Members of the Royal Family from Prince Charles to the Queen Mother have all worn wedding rings that were fashioned from Welsh gold and it is a tradition amongst royals to use this first rate gold when it comes to their wedding rings. However, this tradition may need to be put on hold for the time being as the finite supply of welsh gold that was housed in the hills of North Wales was exhausted in January 2007. As such, wedding rings made from this material have skyrocketed in popularity and a number of celebrities can boast wedding rings made from Welsh gold, such as Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

Wedding Rings – Welsh Gold’s Knockout Blow

The extensive demand for welsh gold to be used in wedding rings, coupled with its limited supply made it inevitable that its resources would one day be exhausted. This occurred in 2007 and wedding rings from this material are now only seldom made from the scarce amount that remains unused. The Welsh boxer, Joe Calzaghe, upon hearing that the supplies were limited deliberated whether to have a commemorative boxing belt made from Welsh gold. Generally speaking, Welsh gold is more expensive than most of its counterparts and this is undoubtedly due, in no small part, to the fact it has a connection to royal wedding rings and is increasingly rare.
