Wedding Rings - In Sickness and in Health
Investing in wedding rings could in fact be an investment in your health. The Office of National Statistics has definitive proof that married couples have a longer life with better health and a more reliable old age. Their divorced, single, widowed or house-share peers just don’t have it so good. The research also shows that children of wedlock are more likely to stay in education. Wedding rings then are more than an investment in love; they can also be an investment in a happier, longer, more fulfilling life.
Wedding rings – more than love
The comprehensive study on the family life was published in late 2007. It may come as bad news to those desperate to find a partner, but it could also provide a powerful motivation for more people to get hitched. Wearing wedding rings is more than demonstrating commitment; wedding rings also indicate status and a place in society. Research has shown in the past wearing wedding rings is indicative of a healthier, happier life, but many sociologists were surprised by the recent results especially with the rise of the single parent and divorcee as the stigma such positions once had has now almost vanished.
The family therapy
Politicians are eager to encourage the stability of family life and those wearing wedding rings have been promised tax cuts and a change to the tax credit system by Conservative leader David Cameron to make married life more financially desirable. The Focus on Families study by the Office of National Statistics however suggests couples wearing wedding rings and cohabiting in marriage will be outnumbered in a generation by those who are single parents or simply co-habiting as a couple.
Wedding rings v. ‘living in sin’
The notion that co-habiting couples are ‘living in sin’ no longer has any sway as society has changed its morals and conventions, but the research shows that getting married is in fact much better for your well being. But more people are opting to ditch the wedding rings. Figures showed:
- 2.3 million people cohabited – a rise of 65% in the past ten years
- 2.6 million were now single-parent families, a rise of 8%
- The number of married couples fell by 4% to 12.1 million
Despite the trends, perhaps it’s time couples looked as marriage as a much more viable alternative if they want a healthier, longer life.
