Jewellery and celebrity wedding rings

Celebrity and wedding jewellery

When you are the biggest celebrities on the planet, you’ve got to have wedding jewellery that’s bigger and better than anybody else. It’s an unspoken rule of celebrity. And so when Michael Douglas was looking for a wedding ring for his marriage to Catherine Zeta Jones, it was a surprise to everybody that he bought his ring from a tiny jewellery shop in a west Wales town.

Jewellery shop charged £3,500

The jewellery shop charged £3,500 – a modest sum for the wealthy Hollywood movie star. But the jewellery was made from welsh gold and was inscribed with an ancient Celtic design. His wedding ring was not just a tribute to Jones’s welsh roots, Douglas was following in a Royal tradition by wearing a band of Welsh gold – Princess Diana’s ring was also made from the precious metal mined from Snowdonia. The star bought the ring from a jewellery shop in Aberystwyth.

Personal jewellery

Welsh gold is thought to be more precious than platinum and is used in royal wedding rings. A wedding ring is likely to be the most personal item of jewellery a person will ever wear. So perhaps it’s understandable that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston filed a $50 million lawsuit against the jewellery firm who made their wedding rings. They said the Italian jewellery firm had breached an agreement never to reproduce the unique design of the rings.

Jewellery designed by Brad Pitt

Even though the marriage between Pitt and Anniston didn’t last, it was certainly romantic. The wedding rings were designed by Pitt himself, and the jewellery was to be unique and distinctive. The rings were made from white gold and diamonds with the engraved words ‘Brad 2000’ and ‘Jen 2000’. The jewellery firm promised not to reproduce the design. But the rings were then replicated and sold on the internet and at shops in Nevada and California.

Advertising jewellery scam

The world’s famous ex-couple complained that they were used to endorse and advertise the jewellery to potential customers, who wanted to copy the Brad and Jen wedding rings. It seems even the most romantic pieces of jewellery can be marred by lawsuits, financial ill-gain and celebrity culture.
