Wedding rings and how to care for them

We’ve all heard horror stories from people who have lost or damaged their wedding rings. Your ring is a strong symbol of your relationship with your partner and it’s loss is always traumatic and upsetting. Do everything you can to keep your wedding ring safe so that you don’t have a horror story of your own.

Wedding ring care

  • Cleaning – you will need to keep your ring clean, as it will lose its lustre, particularly if you are wearing it all the time. You will be exposing it to the weather, and often to harsh chemicals if you are cleaning, washing the car, or are exposed at work. In addition, your ring will pick up dead skin and dust particles from you and the environment you are in. You can clean your ring yourself, or take it to a jewellers, who will often clean your ring for no charge. If you’re attempting to clean your ring yourself, remember that gold is a relatively soft metal so you must use a gentle solution. Experts recommend bespoke jewellery cleansers, a small amount of alcohol or a solution of half water and half ammonia. If you are unsure, always take advice before you clean your wedding ring yourself.
  • Care – the very worst thing you can do is to lose your wedding ring accidentally. That’s why it’s always a good idea to take your ring off and put it somewhere safe when you’re dong tasks that might put your ring at risk. These might include gardening, swimming, contact sports, and mechanical jobs. You may want to wear your wedding ring all the time, but it’s far better to take it off for a couple of hours than to lose it forever.
  • Sizing – make sure that your ring is always a good fit. If your ring feels lose, take it to a jeweller for re-sizing. This will reduce the risk of your wedding ring falling off and getting lost or damaged. It’s not a big or expensive job and is a worthwhile investment in this most precious piece of jewellery.
