Wedding rings – feeling the weight on your finger

Most couples buy their wedding rings way in advance of the big day. In fact, soon after they've bought their engagement rings, they're probably thinking about the style of their wedding rings. Getting the ring finger measured is important to make sure it's the perfect fit. Re-sizing wedding rings can be costly – but increasingly, weight is becoming a common problem when it comes to the perfect fit.

Mc Wedding rings at McDonald's

One couple appeared in a BBC news story for doing the exact opposite of the average bride desperate to slim down for her dress. Alice Clark and Terry Speller probably won't need to re-size their wedding rings by opting for a normal approach to their wedding food – if a little bizarre: they opted for a McDonald's wedding meal. The unusual wedding feast was timed to take place after they put on their wedding rings, before returning to their reception. It may be a cost-effective alternative to a lavish dinner but the couple planned to be chauffeur-driven to the fast food chain.

As Ms Clark told the BBC: “Some brides worry about how they look and what they eat, but I've told Terry he's marrying me and not an image.”

The Rise of the 'Bride-orexic'

For other brides however, image takes over. So much so that they lose a desperate amount of weight so that the original wedding rings fall off their newly slimmed down ring fingers. Slimming down for the wedding dress is all very well, but for those who take it to an extreme, they could end up having to resize their wedding rings as well as their dress. And the thinner version isn't always the most attractive: a trend that has been dubbed 'bride-orexic' has begun to emerge whereby brides end up with eating disorders in an attempt to look their best on their wedding day.

Wedding Rings no Longer Fit

Re-sizing the wedding rings is probably the least of their worries – one bride, Charlotte Buckley, was profiled in the Daily Mail after losing four stone in a year to fit into her bridal gown. She became anorexic in her quest, and risked her life after her family begged her to stop. Becoming painfully thin meant not only did the wedding rings no longer fit, she had to spend six months in hospital recovering. As a result, when it came to exchanging wedding rings, Charlotte was fixated with her weight. She told the press: “The fact that I was marrying the man of my dreams paled in comparison to the joy I felt as a tiny size eight.”

Destructive Perfection

As well as a problem with ill-fitting wedding rings, Charlotte's hip bones and rib cage jutted out of her now too-big wedding dress, that was pinned in place. The eating disorder continued through her honeymoon and early married life until she finally received help after falling to 5st 9lb. It's a cautionary tale that shows brides should be focusing on the meaning of putting on their wedding rings, rather than getting carried away with the image and idea of perfection.
