Wedding rings – facebook spoils the party

For Facebook, the issue of privacy has long been a sticking point and another string was added to the bow of its detractors when a man’s purchase of wedding rings from an external website turned up in his news feed section, effectively allowing everyone to know his intentions. As a result of a new feature installed on Facebook last year, but later scaled back, a man who had intended to surprise his girlfriend with a proposal and wedding ring was left in an awkward situation after the social networking website reported in his news feed that he had bought a wedding ring from an external jewellery website.

Wedding Rings – Letting the cat out of the bag

Whilst you may consult a couple of friends or family members prior to purchasing wedding rings, you certainly don’t expect your impending purchase to broadcast to all your Facebook friends. Worse still, the man’s bride to be was in his list of friends and got the news along with everyone else. The marketing potential of Facebook made it an attractive proposition for businesses which is why the application to see what purchases your friends were making was adding to the news feed. Unfortunately, however, the ramifications of this application weren’t fully considered and the case of the man buying wedding rings and having all his social networking acquaintances know about it before he has had the chance to pop the question is unlikely to be an isolated incident.

Wedding Rings – Privacy Paramount

After the furore surrounding Facebook’s invasion of privacy, changes were made to the application that allowed users to opt out of it so that Facebook could report on purchases, such as wedding rings, in a person’s news feed. This was the most logical step as, being one of the world’s most popular social networking sites, they have to set a precedence so that privacy of users is not compromised by ill-conceived applications.
