Wedding rings - deep blue sea
In a story with some substantial emotional gravitas, a wedding ring that had lain at the bottom of the sea since its war hero owner perished aboard a naval warship in 1917 has, remarkably, been returned to the family of Stanley Cubiss. According to the report on the BBC, in an unlikely turn of events involving wedding rings and remarkable circumstances, the war veteran Stanley Cubriss’ wedding ring was discovered in the sea surrounding the Orkney Islands where his vessel, HMS Opal, lay at the bottom of the ocean. The wedding ring was returned to the family of Mr Cubriss in North Yorkshire after remaining at the bottom of the sea for 89 years.
Wedding Rings - Needle in a Haystack
The chances of discovering items as small as wedding rings in the vastness of the ocean really is more than a one in a million possibility which makes the discovery of Stanley Cubriss’ wedding ring after 89 years at the foot of the sea all the more unbelievable. According to the report on the BBC, the gold band wedding ring was found in near perfect condition by amateur diver, Peter Bradley and the ring bore the words “To Stanley from Flo, March 1916”. Wedding rings obviously have massive sentimental value, so, the diver who discovered the ring set about finding its rightful owner. Speaking to the BBC, Mr Bradley states, “When I realised that I had found something of such a personal nature we knew we had to try and return it to the family.”
Wedding Rings - A Touch of Fate
The sentimentality of wedding rings is well known but in the case of the discovery of Mr Cubriss’ wedding ring after 89 years at the bottom of the sea had its discoverers believing that fate may too have played a part. According to the report on the BBC, Stanley Cubriss’ nephew, Malcolm, was astounded to have the wedding ring returned to the family after almost a century at the foot of the sea. Speaking to the BBC, Malcolm Cubriss states, “Buried in the sea and then found after all these years, it's amazing. It's fitting that the ring be kept in a museum so people can remember the events of that night.” Wedding rings are a sign of commitment but Stanley Cubriss’ wedding band certainly went above and beyond the call of duty.
